How to Spot a Scam Email

Daily we receive scam emails. But when Inland Revenue sends you one detailing a refund, we are always intrigued.  This scam along with others you receive, has wrong data in it which should alert your “scam radar”.

Most individual taxpayers have a March balance date and this refers to 31 May. The correct timeframe should be 12 months. If this was for a 2016 Tax return it wouldn’t include any 2017 dates. It would be dated 1/04/15 to 31/03/16.

This refers to fiscal activity which is an American term not used in NZ accounting.

This refers to NZD but they wouldn’t need to state which currency it is in as everything is in NZD.

Inland Revenue will never send a link for you to click on, instead they will refer you to log on to your myIR account.

Other Things to Look out for

  • Emails won’t say Inland Revenue Department or IRD. They are called Inland Revenue.
  • You will never be asked for your bank account or credit card details.
  • Inland Revenue will never send you an email to say you have a refund.
